Majors Add second Calgary Native for 2022 Season

The London Majors are pleased to announce the signing of Phil Whelan, an outfielder from Calgary AB.

Whelan, 24, attended the University of Calgary and Vancouver Island University. Additionally, Whelan spent time in the WCBL with the Yorkton Cardinals. A solid power bat, 30% of Whelan’s hits with Yorkton were for extra bases. In addition to his power, Phil was also a threat on the basepaths as he went 10/11 in stolen base attempts while playing for Yorkton.

Someone who is very excited to continue his career after the pandemic put a hit pause on his playing days "I thought baseball was over for me once the pandemic hit. But thanks to the help from the Calgary Baseball community and from Baseball Jobs Overseas I am able to continue a baseball career. The opportunity to step between the lines in front of a buzzing crowd is a surreal thought but I’m ready to compete hard with a strong team and bring another championship to London.

Another outfielder to give Manager Roop Chanderdat options with the length of the season increased “Phil will be another player that will give us depth in the outfield. He is a player looking to continue to develop and move up the baseball ladder”

The London Majors are a member of Canada’s top baseball league, the Intercounty Baseball League. In 2021 the London Majors won the IBL Jack & Lynn Dominico Trophy. The 100-year old summer league is one of the oldest baseball leagues in the world, with the league established in 1919, drawing significantly more fans, in a friendly ballpark experience, than any league of its kind.
