Former Dodger joins Majors
The London Majors are pleased to announce the signing of former Los Angeles Dodgers pitching prospect Abdiel Velazquez.
Joining one of the most legendary organizations, Velazquez signed as an international free agent with the Dodgers on July 2, 2009. During his time with the Dodgers, he would play with a 17-year-old Cody Bellinger as he made his way up to the Major leagues (now with the Chicago Cubs). The Panama native pitched 5 seasons with the Dodgers amassing 216 innings, striking out 163 with 92 walks and allowing only 19 home runs.
Velasquez also pitched for Panama at the Caribbean Winter Series in 2019-20. This marks the second year in a row the Majors have had a key piece to their roster come from Panama (Robert Mullen 2022).
“Velasquez gives us another top-of-the-rotation arm who can pitch deep into games. Abdiel has lots of professional experience which will help the young pitchers on our staff. Over his career, he has shown to be a good command pitcher that gets a lot of strikeouts.
The London Majors are a member of Canada’s top baseball league, the Intercounty Baseball League. In 2021 the London Majors won the IBL Jack & Lynn Dominico Trophy. The 100-year old summer league is one of the oldest baseball leagues in the world. The league was established in 1919, drawing significantly more fans, in a friendly ballpark experience, than any league of its kind.
