Cardinals one win from advancing

LONDON – The Hamilton Cardinals are one win from the second round after a 5-4 victory over the London Majors Saturday night at Labatt Park.

Grant Arnold's sacrifice fly with one out in the top of the ninth scored Greg Marco for the winning run as Hamilton leads the best-of-five series 2-1. Arnold and Chris Beer each went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Connor Bowie drove in two, while David Vanderby singled twice and scored once.

Zackary Gonzalez (1-0) picked up the win, throwing two scoreless innings of relief with two walks and two strikeouts. Josh Freeman started and went seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits with five walks and four strikeouts.

For London, Keith Kandel had three hits and two RBI, while Evan Britt singled twice and scored twice. Carlos Arteaga doubled and scored.

Kelvin Pichardo (1-1) took the loss, giving up a run on two hits with a walk in the ninth inning.

Starter Joan Montero lasted eight innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits over eight innings. He walked four and struck out seven.
