It was one of those nights for the London Majors when things just didn't go as planned, leading to a 9-5 loss to the visiting Guelph Royals at Labatt Memorial Park on Friday night.
After giving up an unearned run in the first inning, London put single runs on the scoreboard in each of the next four innings to take a 4-1 lead after five innings. The Royals took the lead back with a four-run rally in the top of the sixth inning. Guelph picked away with five hits off London starting pitcher Travis Keys in that sixth inning. Keys took the loss with six complete innings, giving up nine hits while striking out six. Guelph led 6-4 at that point. Caleb Cassie, Dustin Davidson, and Zachary Laird finished up in relief of Keys. Liam Watt was the winning pitcher for the Guelph Royals.
The Majors' 12-hit attack came from eight different players. Eduardo De Oleo and Cristian Inoa led the way with three hits each. One of Iona's hits was his eighth-inning solo home run over the left-field fence. Starling Joseph and Xavier Whittle each added a home run. Jarrett Burney had two singles while Trent Linehan and Tucker Zdunich recorded one hit each.
With their 17-9 record, the London Majors find themselves in a first-place tie in the Canadian Baseball League standings with the Barrie Baycats.
CBL All-Star Weekend is taking place Saturday and Sunday at Fergie Jenkins Field in Chatham.
The Majors will have a rare Wednesday night road game when they travel to Brantford to take on the Red Sox at Arnold Anderson Stadium. Next home game for the London Majors is Friday, July 17th, when the Chatham Barnstormers visit Labatt Memorial Park for a 7:05 start.
