Ït was just a good team win for us against a good Guelph team, ̈ is how field manager Roop Chanderdat described the London Majors 7-4 win over the Guelph Royals Saturday night at David E Hastings Stadium.
The Majors scored first in the game as they have done frequently this season, and they led 4-3 going into the eighth inning. The Royals tied the score in the bottom of the eighth to set up a ninth inning London rally, and for the second night in a row, Ryan Beitel earned the win, his second of the season, and Sklylar Janisse got his league-leading seventh save of the season.
The game featured strong pitching throughout from both sides as was indicated by manager Chanderdat's comments, ̈Tonight was another round of the Jacob Kush vs. Victor Payano battle, two top pitchers in our league. Payano had a very good outing for us. He allowed us to win a game. ̈
Kush and Payano had similar numbers. They both pitched seven innings and allowed eight hits and left with no decision. Roop Chanderdat talked about his team's approach at the plate. ̈Tonight I was very proud of our hitters and base running. We had a disciplined approach at the plate, which showed in the box score for Zdunich, Reichstein, Garner and Sugi. We executed some key hit-and-run and steals.
The 11-hit London attack was led by Ken Sugi with three hits and two RBI, Tucker Zdunich with two hits including his third double of the season, two RBI and one run scored, Byron Reichstein with two singles, one RBI and two runs scored. Champ Garner had two singles and Josh Niles and Francisco Fajardo had one hit each.
The Majors will look to sweep their three game weekend when they visit Christie Pits Sunday afternoon to face the Toronto Maple Leafs at 2 p.m.
